Where the heck are we anyway?? No one has ever heard of Mustoe! We’re in Highland County, shown on the map at left, in the Appalachian Mountains of western Virginia. Highland is the least populous county in the eastern US and has the second-highest mean elevation. [The highest is Pocahontas County, WV, bordering us to the west.] Why are we here? Hmmmm . . . I thought I just explained that! Highland and Pocahontas counties are the mothers of rivers. We are very close to the headwaters of Jackson River, which flows to the James River and Chesapeake Bay. Just to the north of us are the headwaters of the South Branch of Potomac River. Greenbrier River rises in Pocahontas County and flows west to New River, Kanawha River and the Ohio. Cheat River rises just to the northwest and flows north to Monongahela River and the Ohio at Pittsburgh. And the famous Gauley River rises in western Pocahontas, joining the New to form the Kanawha. For a canoeist and long-time river rat, it’s downstream in all directions.

Locate Monterey at the junction of US 220 and 250, then go south on 220 for 7 miles to Mustoe. We’re another 1¼ miles south on 220, just past a hard right turn. You can also see a closeup view of our local topo map. On this view we are right in the middle of the map. To see a wider area, select the 1:250K series and 1:1,000,000 scale, click “Update Map” and you will see most of Highland County, with us still right in the middle.
